Walk for Live and Bhoomika dance Festival Delhi
2012-01-31

"So the news feed returns. and will be continued ASAP!!
I am in Delhi again, after balmy Mumbai, and magical Goa, where batteries were seriously charged in preparation for the February madness.
Sun 5th: am helping out the CanSupport organization in their "Walk for Life", a fundraiser to help people in terminal stages of cancer receive palliative care.
Some personal stories about this event coming up soon, and especially "apres coup", after the event.

But one big cat I am allowed to let out of the bag now is that I have choreographed a 23 minute piece for 8 wonderful young dancers of the Bhoomika Creative Dance Company here in New Delhi.
The adventure with these kids has been truly heArtwarming and some videos about "the making of" will be posted after the festival.
India is usually the country I come back to when the western world moves too far too fast; to slow down, breathe, look around and be blessed by magical moments at every corner.
Well things were moving at such speed here in Delhi, that the Mumbai/Goa trip became vital, to do just that; reconnect with the elements, relax, recharge to come back to rehearsals with more energy and passion:

This new work will be premiered as part of the Bhoomika Contemporary dance Festival, held in the capital, New Delhi, at the Shri Ram Center, from the 14th till the 17th Feb:

my new piece "ASAP" will premiere on Feb. 15th and will be the second piece on a triple bill.
If you are in Delhi, please Come and see us!!!

Some detailed program notes about the piece follow and will elaborate soon: wrote a whole notebook about it on the flight to Mumbai.

choreography: Sheela Raj (India/UK/France)
performed by: Meenakashi Chopra, Himani Sharma, Neha Gupta, Pratima Dhankhar, Vijesh Sharma, Rahul Goswami, Pradeep Chand Sati, Sanjay Swaraj

1. IKARUS
music Friedrich Glorian (Germany) "Free Flight" loosely inspired by the Icarus myth

2. Sara 'n' Merce
music Christof Dienz (Austria)
inspired by Sara Rudner's exquisite movement quality, and Merce Cunningham's iconic photo from his solo to John Cage's "Child of Tree".
subtitled: "Endangered Species": symbolic of our destruction of the natural habitat for all living species, including humans.

3. RITMO INFERNO
music Suchet Malhotra (India) to a score by Sheela Raj,
"The relentless passage of time":
a short extract from a solo "PanchaLila" I created for the Avignon Festival in 1980.
Music was composed and played live then by Zakir Hussain.
This extract for 8 dancers explores canon/delay/retrograde/repetition etc.

4. CHASSE CROISE
Zither maestro Christof Dienz's music "Dances Us":
a celebration of pure movement and of the 8 dancers who shared energy, huge talent, hard work, fun and much love during the making of ASAP.

Twyla Tharp's Torelli & the Dance Center Chicago
2008-03

Winter days were pulling into the core and preparation for a special project at the Dance Center of Columbia College, Chicago , where Bonnie Brooks invited Sheela to re-stage and coach an old Twyla Tharp piece from 1971, Torelli with the dancers of the RPW (repertory performance workshop). This was a "blast from the past" for Sheela, who had left the Company and NYC in the early 70's.

Accademia Nico Pepe
2007-12

the next stop was Udine where Sheela and Friedrich Glorian had their annual date with the diploma students of the Accademia Nico Pepe, directed by Claudio de Maglio. Claudio feels that this workshop creates a deep bond between the students and challenges them to communicate on a plane beyond words and intellectual concepts: to take responsibility for each other's well being and to dissolve the barriers of competition leading them to an awareness of emulation instead.
Our workshop ended with a master class in the 5 Elements, Earth, Water, Fire, Air and their application in the Moving Breathing Acting body/mind/soul.

Mayim Mayim
2007-11

Early Nov. Nadesh joined Sheela to prepare her 3 min solo for the Mayim project. Sheela was unfortunately not able to create a new choreography due to lack of time, so she chose to use elements of the Indian dance forms Nadesh already knew and weave them into a coherent fabric that could mesh with the "Folklore" section that opened the 2nd half of this 3 hour program.

India & HH The Dalai Lama
2007-10-03

Soon after her return to Europe, Sheela left for India, where she had the enormous privilege of personally meeting HH. the Dalai Lama at his Dharamshala home. With blessings galore from HH for the project Mayim Mayim and the 33 young dancers who were due to participate , and for the extended Moving Breath family, she returned to Germany mid Oct.

While in Delhi, Sonali Mathur Prasad organized a mini workshop where Sheela shared the Moving Breath techniques with a young dance collective Gati.
