The seeds of my research into the ‘Yoga of Woman’ were sown in 1984.
Till then, although I had been practicing yoga for many years, it had always been secondary to my main field, which was that of dance.
I questioned many gurus and teachers about yoga practices during the menstrual period. The replies I received were summary and often boiled down to stopping everything. Having firmly established certain practices into my daily routine by then, the answers did not satisfy me.
I realized then that mainstream yoga had developed through men for men and the answers would have to come through women for women.
And so I started experimenting on myself to find a way to adapt the yogic practices to my reality as a woman.
Having experimented on myself, (with positive results), it was inevitable that I would choose to share these discoveries with other women.
I spoke to several doctors working in the field of yoga therapy showing them the results of my research and how it was possible to continue practicing in an intelligent way and above all to maintain continuity on the experiential level.
I also closely collaborated with a woman who is both a physiotherapist and a cranial osteopath, who, through a detailed analysis of the movements in the menstruation series gave me a fresh insight and enough enthusiasm to define, clarify and extend the series.
It became clear that it was not only the practices during the menstrual flow that had to be adapted, but it was vital to consolidate the energetic balance during the other moments of the cycle. The idea of the wave became clear and that of waves within waves, in which one takes into account the time of day, the seasons and life and work rhythms. And, since each woman is unique, the overall program has to be adapted to her specific needs.
Therefore the title ‘Yoga of woman’ and not ‘Yoga for women’.
It is not something to be imposed on women from some outer source, but is simply a means to help women rediscover their own intuition.
To reclaim what has always been there, the true intelligence of the body-mind-spirit.
